New River is the oldest river in North America

New River Gorge National Park, located in the Appalachian mountains of southern West Virginia, became the 63rd National Park in December 2020. However, its history began long before it became America’s newest National Park.

New River Gorge National River is not only the oldest river in North America; but it is also one of the most scenic areas on the East Coast. The three-hundred and twenty mile long waterway flows from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina into Virginia, before making its way to West Virginia where it connects with the Kanawha River.

So whether you’re floating down the New River on a rafting trip or taking in the scenery from the rim of the New River Gorge, notice that this magnificent river is more than just rapids-the gorge itself is beautiful.

White Water Rafting in New River Gorge: The New River

Choosing which raft trip to take on the New River can be a little overwhelming, but we’re here to help! Here’s a breakdown of each section of the river and what you can expect so that you can make an informed decision for your trip.

The Upper New is a beautiful float trip with small rapids and calm water. It is terrific for families or first-time rafters who want to experience the river without the thrill of bigger rapids. It is also great for the avid photographer who wants to capture the natural beauty of the New River as you float through this deep gorge .

The Lower New is the more exciting rafting trip in the Gorge, with rapids and technical maneuvers that provide thrilling adventure for all rafters. Both of these trips are on the same river, providing an opportunity to experience select parts of the New River Gorge in a single trip.

The Upper New River Gorge offers class 1-3 rapids, Best for Novices and Families with Young Children.

The Upper New River is one of the best river trips for families and first-timers looking for a safe and fun way to experience outdoor adventure together. It’s not too challenging with gentle class I to III rapids and great scenery. Spend your day on the river swimming through calm pools, jumping off large boulders, and taking in the scenic beauty that surrounds you. Lastly, I recommend trying out an inflatable kayak on the Upper New! The rapids are fun and easy to maneuver through in a ducky.

To sum up, this section of the river makes a wonderful trip for the whole family, regardless of skill level. The minimum age to raft the Upper New River is six years old. I definitely recommend that you make it a full-day trip with a riverside lunch and lots of fun!

The Lower New River Gorge offers class 4-5 rapids, Best for Thrill Seekers

The lower New River’s tight technical maneuvers help it earn its reputation as some of the most thrilling white water rafting in the country. For example, Double Z rapid requires precise maneuvering around rocks and a sharp turn around a corner. And yet, as you successfully maneuver down the river towards your takeout under the famous New River Gorge Bridge, you’ll feel like an expert.

During the summer, warm water and moderate water level make the Lower New River a more gentle rafting trip. However, even at lower water levels, this section of the New River still offers exciting rapids and technical maneuvers that provide a thrilling adventure for all rafters. Spring and fall on the river can get chilly, be sure to as your river guides for a wetsuit before you leave basecamp to prepare for cooler temperatures.

New River rafting season begins April 1st and continues through the summer, and into fall. It ends around late October, Bridge Day (the third weekend in October).

White Water Rafting in New River Gorge: Gauley Season

The Gauley River is an American Class IV river located in the New River Gorge region of West Virginia. It is part of the National Park service. The Gauley is one of the premier whitewater rivers in the United States and is one of the best places in the world for kayaking, canoeing, rafting, and other forms of whitewater recreation.

Lower Gauley River rafting offers an exciting, scenic trip through 10 miles of whitewater. This thrilling section of river is a terrific option for first-timers looking for adventure and experienced rafters. Full-day excursions include a riverside lunch and some of the most dramatic scenery in all of West Virginia.

The Upper Gauley River is a 12-mile stretch of class II – V whitewater, including a 14’ waterfall that will challenge even the most advanced boater. You’ll have an exhilarating adventure with our guides leading the way, and you’ll enjoy delicious lunch break on the riverbank with your new friends. An Upper Gauley trip is a full day trip.
