The Best Memorial Day Weekend Trips from DC, Richmond & Pittsburgh — New River Gorge
If you’re within 4.5 hours of New River Gorge National Park and you haven’t been, Memorial Day weekend is the reminder you needed.
Most people planning a long weekend trip are looking at the beach, the mountains, or a city. New River Gorge sits in its own category — it’s a national park that feels raw and wild, it’s in a small town worth exploring, and it’s close enough to major cities that the drive doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. From Washington, DC, it’s 4.5 hours. From Richmond, 3.5. From Pittsburgh, 3. Columbus, 4. Charlotte, 3.5 hours.
I’ve been hosting in Fayetteville since 2018 and living here since 2013. I’ve watched this area go from a quiet outdoor destination to a national park — the designation happened in 2020 — and I still think most people underestimate what a weekend here can be. Memorial Day is when I start getting calls from people who have already waited too long.
So here’s what I’d tell anyone planning a Memorial Day trip from the mid-Atlantic or Midwest.

Why Memorial Day weekend at New River Gorge is worth the drive
The timing is right. Late May at NRG means warm days, cool nights, and trails that are fully accessible. Wildflower season winds down, but the canopy is fully leafed out — it’s the best possible light for hiking. The river is at a great level for whitewater rafting: not too high, not too low.
The crowds are manageable. Memorial Day is busy at NRG, but busy here looks different than busy at Shenandoah or the Smokies. The trails aren’t shoulder-to-shoulder. The town of Fayetteville is lively but not overwhelming. You’ll feel the energy of a holiday weekend without feeling like you’re fighting for a parking spot.
You can do a lot in three days. One day for hiking (Long Point Trail is 3.2 miles round-trip with views worth every step). One day for whitewater rafting through Adventures on the Gorge or ACE Adventure Resort. One day to exhale — Fayetteville’s coffee shops, restaurants, and shops on Court Street, plus however much time you want on a porch. That’s a satisfying weekend.

What to Do Over Memorial Day Weekend
Hike Long Point Trail
Long Point Trail is 3.2 miles round-trip from the trailhead off Gatewood Rd, and the payoff is one of the best views in the park: a rocky outcrop overlooking the gorge and the NRG Bridge. The trail gains about 400 feet in elevation — manageable for most fitness levels. Go early on Saturday morning before the heat picks up. The drive from downtown Fayetteville is 8 minutes.

Walk the Canyon Rim Boardwalk
If you have one hour and want the iconic New River Gorge Bridge view, the Canyon Rim Visitor Center boardwalk is where you go. It’s paved, accessible, and short — about half a mile out and back — and the bridge view from the overlooks is genuinely worth it. The Canyon Rim Visitor Center has exhibits on the park’s history if you want context. It’s 5 minutes from downtown Fayetteville.
Go Whitewater Rafting
Memorial Day weekend is prime rafting season on the New River. Adventures on the Gorge and ACE Adventure Resort are the two main outfitters, both offering half-day and full-day trips at various difficulty levels. Half-day trips typically run 4–5 hours, including shuttle time, so a morning departure gets you back by early afternoon. If your group has mixed experience levels, the Upper New River is the better choice — class I–III rapids that are exciting without being overly technical. The Lower New River runs class III–V and is best suited for paddlers with more experience. Book ahead; popular time slots fill up for Memorial Day.

Walk the New River Gorge Bridge
The BridgeWalk experience lets you walk the catwalk under the New River Gorge Bridge — one of the longest steel arch bridges in the world. It’s guided, takes about three hours, and gives you a perspective on the bridge you can’t get from the overlooks. Book in advance at bridgewalk.com. The departure point is 1.8 miles from Adventure Haven and 5 minutes from the Downtown Bungalow.
Explore Fayetteville
Downtown Fayetteville is small and walkable, which is most of the charm. Cathedral Café and Rangefinder Coffee are both worth a morning stop. Court Street has several good dinner options, including South Side Junction, and Secret Sandwich Society. The local boutiques are a highlight too — Lost Appalachia Trading Co., Mayari, The Wild Kind, Hobbit Hole, and New River Zen are all worth browsing.

One More Thing
New River Gorge is one of America’s youngest national parks, established in December 2020. A lot of people who’ve heard of it haven’t been there yet. Memorial Day weekend is when the Gorge hits its stride — the trails are green, the river is running well, and Fayetteville is fully in season.
