Top 5 Hikes

Long Point Trail

Long Point Trail

Free
Long Point Rd, Fayetteville 10 min from downtown

The hike locals recommend first — a 3-mile round trip through mixed hardwood forest ending at a sandstone promontory with one of the best above-water views of the New River Gorge Bridge. The moderate elevation gain keeps it accessible without feeling too easy. Give yourself an hour and a half, bring water, and plan to linger at the overlook.

Local tip: The trailhead parking lot is small — arrive before 9am on weekends or you’ll park along Long Point Rd and add 0.4 miles each way. The overlook faces southwest, making late afternoon the best light for photos.
Endless Wall Trail

Endless Wall Trail

Free
Fern Creek Trailhead, Lansing 15 min from downtown

Named USA Today’s best national park hike. Endless Wall follows the rim of a sandstone cliff band above the New River for 2.5 miles out to Diamond Point overlook. The trail rolls through rhododendron thickets and past active climbing routes, with open gorge views appearing regularly along the way. Easy to moderate.

Local tip: Start from the Fern Creek Trailhead near Canyon Rim Visitor Center for the easiest access. Diamond Point overlook is the turnaround and the reward — don’t cut the hike short.
Grandview Rim Trail

Grandview Rim Trail

Free
Grandview Rd, Beaver 30 min from downtown

The accessible, crowd-pleasing panoramic view of the gorge — a wide oxbow bend in the New River that looks almost impossibly dramatic from the rim. The trail is easy, mostly flat, walkable in trail runners or sneakers. The view at the main overlook is genuinely one of the best in West Virginia.

Local tip: Walk past the main overlook to Grandview Overlook No. 2 and Castle Rock for quieter spots with equally good views and far fewer people.
Kaymoor Miners Trail

Kaymoor Miners Trail

Free
Kaymoor Trailhead, Fayetteville 15 min from downtown

The history hike — a descent of more than 800 stairs to the ruins of a coal mine that operated at the bottom of the gorge until 1962. The trail passes old mining equipment, stone foundations, and sections of track being slowly reclaimed by forest. Moderate difficulty but intense on the knees going down and lungs coming back up.

Local tip: The 800+ stairs hit hard on the return — take your time, bring twice as much water as you think you need, and go in the morning before the heat builds. Poles help on the way back up.
Glade Creek Trail

Glade Creek Trail

Free
486 Babcock Rd, Clifftop 30–35 min from downtown

Runs through Babcock State Park alongside one of the best swimming creeks in southern West Virginia, ending at the iconic Glade Creek Grist Mill — a fully operational reconstruction that is practically the state’s mascot. Mostly flat, follows the creek the whole way, and passes multiple swimming holes. In summer, plan to get in the water.

Local tip: Park at the lower trailhead near the campground to hike to the mill rather than starting at the mill parking lot — you get the payoff at the end.

Top 5 Breweries & Bars

$$
103 Keller Ave, Fayetteville Walkable downtown

Don’t let the gastropub label fool you — Secret Sandwich Society takes both its food and its beer list seriously. Premium-sourced meats on house-made bread, plus an extensive craft beer and cocktail selection that punches well above what you’d expect from a small-town bar. One of those places that rewards guests who linger.

Local tip: Pair one of their specialty sandwiches with a local WV draft — they rotate the tap list regularly and the staff are happy to point you toward whatever’s newest.
The Handle Bar at Arrowhead Bike Farm

The Handle Bar + Kitchen

$$
